[Educators] Canadian connection

HI Seth

as for projects, they'll be toward the end of the semester, I like the health options, a few quick questions:

What I really like about the idea is that

are the sensors cheap?? could we make our own??

Half of my students have taken grade 11 computer programming already (I teach JAVA) a few have already taken the grade 12 computer programming (more JAVA) I have no problem with using Python, neither will my students, as long as they are pointed in the right direction.

The scope of the course I'm running at the moment is that there should ideally be some interfacing, the sensors idea is great, particulalrly if we make our own. other options that work would be setting up and configuring network services, e.g. SKYPE - I had an XO in a voice call with my desktop a week or so ago when I was trying them out.

Ideally I'd like to prepare a list of possible projects over March Break (next week) then have my students research say, 3 of them and 'put in a bid' I have five XO's so I figure 5 student projects with XO's, the other projects could based around some traditional projects such as traffic light simulator using the parrallel port on an old machine. I have a few other 'extra donated machines' that could be used for students to set up and configure a LINUX based network for a specific purpose, I'm on the hunt for a local not for profit group who might actually want us to do a job, this could be a project for several students.

You mention a few 'pet projects' I'd be very interested in hearing more (as would my students)

Thanks again for your interest

Mick

Hey Mick,

What's the news with your HS class? What did you end up working on? http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Health has a lot of juicy projects going on that could use some work. I also have a few pet projects I would love to see someone touch on.

What experience do your students have? Do they know Python? Are they looking for a software/hardware project or a content project, or both?

Any way you like it, if you still would like some help finding a project, I'd be happy to find your class a home.

HI

My students are mainly grade 11 & 12, some would benefit from a challenging project, I'd love to see what they could do if they had a REAL challenge

Thanks for your interest

Excellent! What grade are your students in exactly (multiple)?

I'd love to help your class get involved and contribute. What are people interested in? Right now there are lots of Health projects being started. Which is great because it combines engineering (hardware EKG and blood Oxymeter), software to read it, and lots of writing and images to teach people about health.

Hello

I teach computer science and computer engineering at Moira Secondary School here in Belleville, Ontario, Canada. As a school we took advantage of the 'give 1 get 1' promotion, in fact we gave 5 and recieved 5. We are VERY impressed with the technology, my students are VERY motivated by the opportunity to work with an open source project like this. We will use the XO's for developing expertise in Linux, networking, software development, testing and troubleshooting. What we would also like to do is make global connections with schools in other countries that are using the same technology, maybe we could even collaborate on creating new activities. The learning opportunities are endless.
