setting the locale ?

On an XO-1 system with an SoaS image installed, I am seeing messages:
"bash: warning: setlocale: LC_CTYPE: cannot change locale (en_US.UTF8):
No such file or directory"

I notice that this system does not have  /etc/rc.d/init.d/olpc-configure
(or equivalent), where I believe locale is set for laptop.org builds.


Any suggestions for what I might do to correct these warnings ?
