Most people use the 'neck' coupling / monitor hinge or the green
bumper at the top of the screen.

The XO does usable flat surfaces.

The bumps are there for a good reason: they keep the laptop without
scratches. The pre-bumps XOs that were used in the field would get
scratched rather quickly.
