if i run "strings /usr/bin/NetworkManager" i find:
    ....
    /usr/sbin/wpa_supplicant
    -ddd
    ....

so i'd be suspicious that NetworkManager (re)starts wpa_supplicant.

(if this is the case, we should perhaps remove (or disable)
/etc/init.d/wpa_supplicant, since presumably all it does is slow
our boot.)
