i was actually picturing something very simple:  fixed text that
could be automatically populated (i assume the download
directories themselves are created automatically) either via a
README file or an enhanced index listing:

    If updating using method-x, you'll need files with suffix
    .foo and .bar.  See some-page-about-x for more details on
    how to use these files.

    If updating using method-y, you'll need the .baz file.  See
    some-page-about-y for more details.

    If updating using methods z or w, or updating a release
    earlier than 123.456, you don't need any of these files.  See
    page-z-or-w for details.

    Files ending in .abc or .def are only used by developers -- you
    probably don't want them.  See page-about-that.
