Need help installing an activity

Yes. Use "sugar-install-bundle /path/to/bundle.xo" from the Terminal  
activity, which unzips the activity and tells the Sugar shell that it  
was installed.

Yes. Clicking the .xo in the Journal view of your USB drive will  
install it.
