The "core.editor" config option works fine here (git version
1.5.3.rc6.17.g1911).

Maybe the files are encoded with MS-DOS style EOLs?  Just a guess.

For help and support, IRC generally works better than mailing-lists or
wikis, because we can interactively ask you to issue some commands and
report the results.

We mostly hang on the #olpc channel.  But for git support, the #git
channel is probably a better bet.
