Well, that turned out to be easy, once I got around to testing it.

All it takes to bring back the touchpad is to issue the "stream on" 
command to the touchpad, i.e. send 0xf4 to the PS/2 AUX device and 
consume the ACK that comes back.  After that, the touchpad sends events 
as usual.
