Mounting a USB drive (windows format)

Got it!!

The reason it was failing to mount the USB drive was because the
VMWare  image supplied is beign buitl with a VMWare Workstation 5 VM.
Workstation 5 has incomplete USB support.

The solution, if you are running workstation is to shut down the VM
and use the VM->"Convert or Update VM" menu option to upgrade the VM
to Workstation 6.

If anyone runs into this problem but only has VMWare player, I can
export a copy of my upgraded VM image for them.

Knowing what *should* work meant I wasn't shooting completely  in the dark.
