What rev of board do you have? My ATest board has a small momentary push
button (SW11) marked EC_reset located in bwtween the GX and the CS5536.
Frob the button and the board resets.

I very much suspect then that the 8051 on the EC was still held in reset
until you power cycled the board.
I'm going to verify that right now.
