 NetworkManager will take over the connection when it gets started.  Can
 you post some output from /var/log/messages?  Does the asix driver support
 carrier detection?  If not, there's no way NM can enable the connection
 automatically because there's no way to detect if anything is connected to
 the card.  We already know that the QEMU ne2k_pci driver doesn't support
 link detection.

 NM shouldn't break wireless tools; you can also stop the NM service (using
 /sbin/service NetworkManager stop) and disable it with /sbin/chkconfig
 --level 2345 NetworkManager off
