We are *totally* committed to a truly Open Source platform, in all
aspects. The current limitation is a purely practical matter of hours
in the day. Please understand that there are currently only three H/W
folks at OLPC: one is dedicated to wireless, one to the display, and
then there's me -- everything else, including system architecture,
electrical engineering (architecting two custom ASICs), mechanical
engineering, and the engineering interface to Quanta, industrial design,
test & regulatory, human and AC power, etc.
Fortunately, we've identified a very promising hardware candidate that
would be a terrific addition to the team, who could provide the degree
of support necessary to allow us to publish the schematics. The sooner
we can bring 'em on board, the better! We'll get this fixed, folks -
sorry for the delay!
On a related issue, a contributing factor is that, after several
attempts, we have not yet received non-confidential datasheets for some
of the key components - there would still be too many "black boxes",
even with the schematics. We'll keep pushing to get these opened up for
you, as well.
Cheers!
Mark
