Justin,

Sounds like you've discovered a bug; please report it in Trac. In any
case, here's a possible workaround:

Instead of booting into runlevel 3 by default, boot to runlevel 5 as
usual but disable X startup in /etc/inittab. You can run X when you
please with the 'olpc-dm' command.
