By "still shuts down" you mean that this problem existed prior to
updating your OS build? I ask because there was a previous report of
losing the battery after an OS build update. OS build 653 contains the
same q2d06 system firmware (what the laptop shipped with) so nothing is
different wrt battery charging.

Sounds like your battery is run down and not charging back up. So
unplugging is the same as the "off" switch. :)

More evidence that your battery is dead. It has just enough juice to
get things started but then as other subsystems start coming up the
votage drops below the critical level and stuff shuts off.
