[olpc-help] Confused about updating G1G1 XO

I'm posting this here, because I posted at forum.laptop.org (under
"General Questions") but my confusion was not cleared up :-) The
answers that I did get seemed to indicate that my son's XO was acting
diffrently than others, so if mine isn't acting "correctly", please
tell me.

I should preface by saying that I'm very comfortable with Linux, and
have run several versions of Fedora Core and Ubuntu, so I'm not a newbie

I keep reading (throughout the wiki and these forums) that the latest
stable build is 656. Wanting to keep my son's laptop up to date, I've
tried a couple of methods from information I've found in the wiki, but
am confused about some things.

1. I updated olpc-update to version 2.0 per instructions that I found,
and have tried updating from a USB thumb drive (olpc-update --usb) and
over the internet (olpc-update -rv 656). Both times I got the message:

New build not signed; this update won't boot without a developer key.
Update aborted; use --force to override.

2. I've seen throughout the wiki where applications and updates can be
installed through yum (yum install whatever). The repos are exactly as
they were when the laptop was received, and in the forum posts and
wiki I've never read anything about enabling certain repositories. But
when I try a simple "yum check-update", I get the error:

http://mock.laptop.org/repos/local.ship ... ary.xml.gz: [Errno -1]
Metadata file does not match checksum
Trying other mirror.
Error: failure: repodata/primary.xml.gz from olpc_local-ship2: [Errno
256] No more mirrors to try.

Is there a definitive resource for keeping a G1G1 laptop up to date?
Again, this isn't mine (though I wish I'd gotten one for myself ),
and I have no desire to experiment with my son's educational tool.

Thanks,
Rick
