Screen blacks out midway during boot

I have just discovered that the screen will not black out during boot, and all 24 white dots will form a complete circle, if the system is powered off gracefully, by going to Terminal and entering "poweroff".  If the physical power switch is simply pressed to shut the machine down, the next boot results in CRC node error messages.  

WHAT IS THE EASIEST, CORRECT WAY TO POWER OFF?  This should be more intuitive.  To ask a child who speaks Spanish to enter a long English word like "poweroff" is really asking a lot.  Jonathan Jarvis
