 i just hit this as well.  again, rsync is involved, running across an asix
 usb ethernet adapter (one of the OLPC-branded ones).

 allocation failures one night at 1:00 am, but after some error spew, the
 system (seemed to) recover.

 the following night, again at 1:00 am, the system hard crashed.

 log attached.  kernel is 15e87a48, with the addition of
 CONFIG_USB_SERIAL_KEYSPAN.  the keyspan module was not in use at the time
 (no device inserted), but may have been loaded.
