 Tested 8686, things work as desired.

 On the XO:
 {{{
 echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_broadcasts
 }}}

 Now use mjoin on the XO from https://lkml.org/lkml/2004/8/5/143

 and ping 224.1.1.37 from another host while the XO is asleep. While mjoin
 is running, the XO wakes up to the multicast ping. At other times, it
 stays asleep.
