Comment(by shep):

 Last week while playing with an XO-4 with mwifiex/8787 at IETF86 in
 Orlando I had wireless network failure I was able to investigate and found
 that packets were still being received by mwifiex/8787 and it seemed as if
 packets were being transmitted OK but I could find no evidence that
 anything ever received the packets transmitted by the mwifiex/8787
 interface. This was not just after a fresh boot like the first time I
 witnessed this 6 weeks ago (but I don't remember the details). There
 were no relevant error messages in dmesg. The system otherwise seemed
 fine.

 After awhile I recovered mwifiex/8787 full functionality by forcing
 poweroff on suspend for one suspend/resume.

 So I've seen this sort of failure two or three times now.
