Comment(by wad):

 After a suspend, the icon appears correct while connecting (center filled
 with AP's color, showing a lock icon for WPA, and blinking).  But then
 once connected it reverts to the same (O) icon with no color in the
 center, no lock icon, and stating "No wireless connection" on hover.

 After a reboot, everything is back to normal.
