Comment:

 ''alsactl store'' shows that the ''Master Playback Volume'' has one
 channel, but the ''Master Playback Switch'' has two channels.

 Removing the ''Master Playback Switch'' solves the symptom.

 Changing both controls to mono.  See [http://dev.laptop.org/git/olpc-

 cca0b8e].

 Test cases:
  * volume up and down keys cause only 10% (plus or minus rounding) change
 to volume displayed by ''amixer get Master'',
  * ''speaker-test -t sine'' with use of volume keys gives results in the
 right direction, with at least eight levels of volume,
  * mute polarity correct when using frame icon,
  * results repeatable with headphones, except that Master control levels 8
 and below will be indistinguishable,
