 To summarize all that log data:

  USB is working fine (though I'll note that I can't cleanly umount the usb
 stick since it says it is "in use", though fuser doesn't report that
 anything is using it).

  iwconfig doesn't show any wireless devices at all, and
 /proc/bus/usb/devices doesn't show anything other than 2 host controllers.

  I did notice early on in dmesg these potentially relevant lines:

 [   39.488254] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready
 ...
 [   40.969137] libertas: SCAN_CMD failed
