Comment:

 I wrote a Turtle Art program to mimic Measure to see if I could replicate
 the problem there. Indeed, after about 10 minutes, reading raw audio
 samples from the microphone, I started getting zeros. Restarting did not
 fix the problem, no adjusting alsamixer controls. So I suspect the problem
 is at a lower level in the audio stack.
