 At the time that code was added, the small composites were a big
 performance bottleneck.  Could you run a default gtkperf test with and
 without the patch to see if there is any significant differences in those
 use cases?

 With the changes that have been made in the render backend it is possible
 this fallback is no longer needed for decent render performance.
