 powerd needs complete control over system suspend.

 upowerd watches the laptop's lid state, and kills the display and suspends
 the laptop when the lid is closed.  needless to say, this can confuse
 powerd.

 setting

 /etc/UPower/UPower.conf
 }}}
 seems to fix the problem.

 we should probably also disable WattsUp device detection:

 EnableWattsUpPro=false
 }}}

 in the absence of any meaningful upowerd documentation, it's hard to know
 whether there are other settings we should be turning off as well.
