 The experience I had years ago is sadly exactly that -- I saw multiple
 programs within the same Linux distribution write differently named lock
 files.  I forget the exact details.

 This might need a bit more research to see what is being done by various
 programs nowadays.

 An lsof equivalent looking for serial USB devices might work; but could be
 rather slow to use.
