Comment:

 Not sure if there's a better way, but here's a quick way of seeing if
 ttyS0 is in use:

 {{{
 ps --no-headers -t ttyS0 -o comm
 }}}

 Returns only "agetty" if its inactive, and something else (e.g. bash and a
 list of processes running in the serial console, each on different lines)
 if its active.
