Comment:

 Further testing shows that when a mono file is played back by aplay under
 Linux, this behavior results.   Playing back a stereo file with aplay
 produces identical outputs on both headphone outputs.

 Verified with music and headphones under Linux.

 So this is a problem with OFW's setup of the mixer.
