New description:

Fedora 14 uses tty0 for the X console. We use ttyS0 or ttyS2 (for 1.75)
and tty0 to show console messages.

It is not possible to switch to the text console version of tty0 (Alt-F1)
while X is running. Therefore one cannot see the console messages without
 a serial cable.

We should pick a new console to use, although we may not be able to use
F9-F12 due to their volume/brightness remapping.
