 I'm taking a look at this.

 Maybe everyone already realised this, but if you click first in the area
 around the search box (where nothing is clickable), then *in* the search
 box, the focus moves just fine. Thats my starting point for diagnosis
 anyway.

 Running old xulrunner on F14 doesn't seem easy. I tried
 xulrunner-1.9.2.1-3.fc14.i686.rpm (oldest f14 version there is) and I
 could still reproduce it. Recompiling the last version of 1.9.1 (from f12)
