 Pat, you're definitely on the right lines. The solution to that bug was
 adding pulseaudio support to espeak, in addition to portaudio. However on
 the XO, we don't have pulseaudio, so we fall back to portaudio which
 appears to be where the hanging bug actually is (in agreement with my
 earlier observations on this ticket).

 Perhaps you could scour the RH bugzilla for portaudio bugs related to
 freezes/hangs. Perhaps there is something there that is relevant :)
