 i've pushed the attachment.  thanks for tying together so many symptoms.

 i was working on this issue last week, as well, and made the file in
 /etc/init conditional
 on platform.  so i've also pushed that, along with a second patch to the
 xo 1.75 tweaks
 file to remove the device-name edit, which is no longer necessary.

 fyi, ttyS0 does appear externally on 1.75 -- it's present on the quanta
 JTAG/debug ribbon
 header.  (and therefore almost impossible to use.)
