 Monitoring video updates is surely one way to go.
 However, having independent monitoring for dim and blank like the one for
 sleep, may allow some level of pm (dim-sleep-blank for example) in the
 XO-1, where is totally inactivated because of the long response times and
 the screen flickering.
 (Not to mention that may be useful for other things, like script
 triggering ;)
