Confirmed. I had earlier assumed that the still image was just a delay in
the camera properly engaging.

mirrored image on the cameras of all other non-XO laptops and desktops,

I just tested Cheese on another machine, and the live image was not
mirrored by default. There's a "Horizontal Flip" effect that can be
engaged to achieve this.
AFAIK Cheese is using gstreamer for its effects, so I think we could
implement something similar in Record.
