thank you again for your responses. unfortunately, i have tried to
both update the firmware and to re-install a new operating system in
both cases i am not getting anywhere. when i try to update, the
system re-starts, i follow instructions shut down, take out battery
and unplug but when i re-start native keyboard an mouse still do not
function. when i try to install new operating system i get a boot
error which asks me to turn off the machine and os is not updated.

 any other thoughts?

Thanks David, you have excluded the known problem #10597. The next thing
for you to do is to seek repair and service facilities. There may have
been damage to the keyboard or the connector. Please write to
help at laptop.org and ask the volunteers there for assistance.

(our bug tracking system here at dev.laptop.org is more focused on
engineering problems rather than customer support. help at laptop.org by
e-mail is a better option for you, in my opinion.)
