Comment(by dsd):

 During XO-1.5 development we had various headaches until we synchronized
 the colour depth of OFW, the framebuffer, and X to 32bit. Most of the
 problems that we found when mixing them may well be corner cases when
 using a VGA adapter but I'd suggest sacrificing the performance in this
 case, for consistency and safety.
