 My current plan is to

 - olpc-session is testing for machine type, and is part of olpc-utils,
 which also contains the xorg.conf files. So olpc-session knows the hw and
 "knows" whether we're suing SWRandR. Will export an envvar (to be read by
 olpc-rotate :-) )

 - olpc-session can also reset d-pad even after ctrl-alt-backspace :-)
