 unless we're worried about sugar causing the OS to crash, O_SYNC seems the
 wrong tool for the job.  simply setting stdio to be unbuffered (i.e., like
 stderr) is sufficient to ensure log data gets to the disk.  (perhaps this
 is what was discussed at the sugar meeting.)
