 I dislike the idea of putting something in userspace that could be handled
 by the kernel, especially if a default behaviour is obvious.

 Our kernel is used by other distributions other than our own.

 However, I can see your point; the kernel can't tell the difference (at
 the moment) between a suspend for idle and a suspend for lid-close, and
 we've given that job to userspace.
