 mac80211 requires work.

I was describing the current state of support at a source code level, and
this source code is not yet in our build stream. Other work must be
 completed before it is supported.

 > This was with os207 on the XO-1.5 -- that build does not have the new
"thin firmware" described in the "XO-1.5_Wireless_Test_Report"

Yes, I know. But it can be added for testing, and the target audience for
 this testing is developers. See
 http://wiki.laptop.org/go/XO-1.5_Wireless_Test_Setup

 > -- it only has the old libertas firmware as used on the XO-1 (which does
 provide mesh on the XO-1).

No, it has new libertas firmware sd8686.bin specific to the XO-1.5. The
usb8388.bin for XO-1 is not included in the XO-1.5 builds.

 > I take it that the old firmware does not do mesh with the 88W8686, even
though that new chip is similar to the previously used 88W8388 chip.

The existing libertas firmware sd8686.bin in our XO-1.5 build stream does
not provide an 802.11s mesh feature. This was our original intention.

The usb8388.bin firmware is only intended for use with the 88W8388 chip
 attached via USB.

The sd8686.bin firmware is only intended for use with the 88W8686 chip
 attached via SD.

The chips are not similar enough for firmware to be reused at a firmware
 file level.
