 The usual Linux approach, and the one I think we should take, is mapping
 the Fn+F12 key to be the "volume up" key and so on.

 On Fedora 11 this is done with HAL files in /usr/share/hal/fdi. On newer
 systems it is done with udev in /lib/udev/keymaps. See for example
 /lib/udev/keymaps/dell for the file which magically makes my Fn+F11 key be
 "play/pause" as marked, without me having to configure anything. In both
 cases we already have configurations for the XO.
