 In further discussion with Mitch, the crucial information not present in
 this ticket is that I was booting the system immediately after doing an
 fs-update.

 While not explicitly prohibited, this is not recommended.   A laptop
 should be rebooted with "bye" after an fs-update, not booted using "boot".

 There were known (and now fixed) fs-update memory leaks in the OFW version
 used when this bug was found.
