Comment(by mikus):

 I repeated the test on os11. Definitely: I could wake up the XO-1 by
 pressing a key on its keyboard -- but once it had woken up, I could no
 longer use the native keyboard or touchpad.

 Even more strange - once the XO-1 had woken up, it was properly
 recognizing the ALPHABETIC keys on my external USB keyboard (including
 lower case, and upper case when I held down <shift>) -- but whenver I
 pressed a non-alphabetic key (e.g., '1'), the system was interpreting that
 key as the *upper* symbol on that keytop ('!' instead of '1'). After
 having fooled around with <shift> while typing the non-alphabetic keys,
 the USB keyboard started working properly again (pressing '1' produced
 '1').

 It's as though on wake-up the system thought I wanted <shift> for all the
 non-alphabetic keys.
