 smt.fth runs "visible" early on in the start up sequence which makes most
 of the stuff visible.  However, if the dhcp, or samba portion of the
 startup fail prior to loading the smt.fth phase then you are left with
 only a pretty boot screen and the only way to tell what failed is if you
 had a serial cable attached.
