Comment:

 I've spent a while messing with this.  The behavior is *very* strange, and
 I'm far from convinced that it's a camera problem.

 As has been noted, cheese will take pictures just fine.

 When it appears to be just sitting there doing nothing, it's actually
 running 100% CPU, polling and repeatedly trying to read from a socket on
 fd 3.  Meanwhile, the camera is streaming, but nobody's reading the
 frames, so they're getting dropped on the floor.

 Might this be a video output problem?  Some of the (minimal) information
 on the cheese site suggests that video output can be the source of a
 number of difficulties.
