 Having now installed os103, I remember better -- it was off.

 In os102 (and os103), on the first bootup after install the screen dimmed
 just a few seconds after the system got to Sugar.  To avoid future suspend
 (and to avoid the screen's dimming), the first thing I did to the system
 was to go into My Settings and uncheck Automatic power management.
