Comment(by wad):

 The problem referenced by Mikus (the laptop shouldn't aggressively suspend
 while the network is being used) is a completely different problem. It
 does, however, illustrate that screen dimming and laptop suspend should be
 completely independent timers, working from a different set of events.

 The screen dimming should happen some amount of time after the last user
 input (keypress, touchpad, or button). On the Mac, this time appears to
 be 50% of the time specified until the screen goes blank to save power
 (which is itself adjustable from 1 min to never).

 The laptop suspending itself should happen as soon as possible after the
 processor and network become idle, AND SHOULD HAVE NO USER VISIBLE
 CONSEQUENCES (outside of the power LED ?).

 The current solution of brightening the screen for six seconds after every
 key press is just plain annoying.
