 FYI:

 XO-1 - happened to have my ethernet cable plugged in to the XO when I
 first booted an os4 system.  In the (non-pretty) initialization lines
 something scrolled by to the effect that "could not change name
 wlan0->eth0;  eth0 already in use".  Apparently the (somewhat random)
 device assignment process had decided to use the name 'eth0' when it set
 up the ethernet (before it got around to setting up the radio).

 Subsequently I manually edited /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules
 and changed the ethernet interface name to 'eth1'.  Before that
 intervention, what 'ifconfig' showed me was:
