 the observed behavior is expected, and somewhat by design -- since only
 one known activity, still under development, makes use of the keys in
 question, it seemed okay to go ahead with the function key change to
 support the HS keyboards.

 this is a legitimate bug -- it's just not very high priority at the
 moment.
