 Data point for future reference:

 Mitch's "poor-man's serial character output routine" (above) was the
 method we used to debug this, and it was easy once we had a serial console
 combined with a laptop that reproduces the problem (thanks Hal).

 And a tip that would have saved us a few rounds of back-and-forth: next
 time this happens, modify panic() to send the message through the serial
 routine, since in this case we were encountering a panic that would have
 clarified things substantially:

 Overlapping early reservations 800-fffff BIOS reserved to 0-fff BIOS data
 page
